Restaurant/Retail

The Vision

Fly Kid Fly Coffee Shop represents an innovative, community-focused space that combines exceptional coffee with a playful, inspiring atmosphere. A collaboration between HEX Coffee Roasters and Durban Hospitality, this 700-square-foot shop was thoughtfully designed by Southwick Architecture and Interiors in Charlotte to bring the vision of “Coffee + Atmosphere” to life.

The concept, with a name inspired by the Wright Brothers, embodies creativity, connection, and a sense of wonder. With its tagline “Coffee + Atmosphere,” Fly Kid Fly aimed to craft a space where customers could feel a spark of inspiration—even during a quick stop for coffee.

Located at The Bowl in Ballantyne, part of a transformative mixed-use development, the shop was designed primarily for to-go orders while offering a welcoming and vibrant environment. The menu features both classic coffee options, like draft vanilla lattes and cappuccinos, and colorful, imaginative beverages tailored to kids and adults alike. Fly Kid Fly’s mission was to create a memorable and uplifting experience for every guest, contributing to the energy and community spirit of Ballantyne.

The Project

Doerre Construction collaborated closely with Southwick Architecture and Interiors to bring the vision for Fly Kid Fly to reality. The challenge of creating a functional, visually striking space within the shop’s compact 700-square-foot footprint required thoughtful planning and precision execution.

The layout, designed by Southwick Architecture and Interiors, optimized the space for seamless operations and guest flow. Durable, modern materials were selected to ensure the space could withstand the demands of a bustling coffee shop while maintaining a clean, polished look. Custom branding elements were incorporated into the design, from playful signage to subtle nods to the Wright Brothers’ legacy, reinforcing the concept’s lighthearted and imaginative vibe.

The construction process emphasized collaboration, ensuring every detail—from the efficient barista counter design to the creative use of wall and ceiling space—aligned with the overall branding and operational goals. By working closely with the design team and the Fly Kid Fly ownership, Doerre Construction ensured the project was completed on time and with exceptional attention to detail.
